The study is concerned with the performance of India in the international economy in the second half of the 19th century. It is an attempt to consider the growth of the export sector and its impact on the rest of the economy through the various linkages, the attraction of foreign investment and its contribution to the growth of the economy, the extent to which indigenous capital and entrepreneurships were cultivated, and the various obstacles which may have prevented the Indian economic growth on a broad front during this period.
