The study is concerned with the performance of India in the international
economy in the second half of the 19th century. It is an attempt
to consider the growth of the export sector and its impact on
the rest of the economy through the various linkages, the attraction
of foreign investment and its contribution to the growth of the
economy, the extent to which indigenous capital and entrepreneurships
were cultivated, and the various obstacles which may have prevented
the Indian economic growth on a broad front during this period.
